Gorgeous feet can carry off anything from comfy flip flops to sexy stilettos. But how do you ensure that your feet which have to bear the brunt of heat, humidity, sweat and long hours of walking every day, remain soft and supple? Here are 5 ways to keep your feet happy, healthy and pampered.
1. Get rid of dead cells with pumice stone
Procedure: Everyday, scrub your feet with pumice stone for at least five minutes. Concentrate on toes and heels, and scrub gently. Pumice stone helps you get rid of dead cells from your feet and increase blood circulation. The pumice stone will actually scrape the top layer of dead skin cells off your feet, dramatically improving their smoothness. Remove skin when it is dry to avoid injury. Rub the pumice block directly onto calluses and rough patches to rub off dead and useless skin.
Tip: Be careful while scrubbing with the stone. If you are too rough, your skin may tear and crack.
2. Feather soft feet with milk and rose petals
Procedure: Soak your feet in warm milk for about 20 minutes and then wash it off with warm water. Milk contains lactic acid which improves the texture of your skin. You can add some rose petals to make your feet smell absolutely wonderful.
If you want to avoid wastage, you can grab a piece of cotton, soak it in warm milk and dab that on your feet.
3. Foot massage with Essential oils
Procedure: Tea tree oil can be irritating to sensitive skin types when not diluted, but it is a common ingredient in foot lotions and scrubs as a natural foot deodorant and fungal medicine. Mix it with rosemary oil to relieve pain and moisturize cracked skin. You can also mix three drops each rosemary, lemon and lavender oils in a warm foot bath to soak your cracked heels. Massage olive, almond or vegetable oil into your skin and cover with cotton socks to moisturize overnight.
Tip: Wear socks at home as they keep your feet warm and act as a miniature sauna for them.
Moreover, Coconut oil or olive oil are also great natural ways to soften the feet.
4. Germ-free toenails
Procedure: Taking care of your toenails is essential because they tend to accumulate bacteria. Grab a nail cutter and clip away your nails. Clean the ridges between your toes as dirt tends to gather there. Grab a filer and shape your nails. Apply some nail polish, slather on some lotion and you are good to go.
Tip: Follow this process every fortnight to keep your toe nails germ-free.
5. Clean Shoes = Happy And Soft Feet
Procedure: We wash our clothes daily but somehow we never clean our daily footwear on daily basis. Soak and scrub your shoes with mild detergent and a soft brush. Remember, clean shoes will ensure that your feet remain healthy and beautiful always.
Tip: To keep your sneakers clean for a longer duration, always dab your feet and your socks with medicated powder before you hit the road.
6. Soak your feet before going to Bed
Soak your feet in warm water for 10 minutes before you go to bed. You need to do this several days a week. If you don’t regularly take care of your feet, calluses and toughness will start to build up, especially on your heels.
Procedure: Add a few drops of liquid soap and some baking soda (1 tablespoon for 5 liters of water) into the water
Baking soda helps to soften the dead skin and will ease its removal. You could also soak your feet in a foot spa. You can buy these spas at many stores. They often plug in, generating spa-like movement in the water, which is relaxing.
7. Try foot exercises
Doing regular foot exercises can help keep your feet softer and healthier. They stimulate blood circulation, and this can make feet less dry.
Procedure: Use your hands to rotate your feet clockwise and then counter-clockwise. Do this 10 times on each side. Exercise your toes by stretching them outwards and then backwards. You should also do this exercise 10 times each.
Tip: Drink a lot of water in addition to regularly exercising the feet. Hydrating the body makes the skin healthier and softer all the way around.
